Imagining Maynooth: Shaping Our Town’s Future Together

Welcome to Imagining Maynooth.  This initiative of Maynooth Community Council is a response to the invitation from Kildare County Council for the people of Maynooth to actively engage in the preparation of the Local Area Plan 2024-2030. It  is an exciting opportunity for our community to have a direct impact on the future development of Maynooth.

Our goal is to collaborate with residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders to create a shared vision for Maynooth that reflects our aspirations and values. By participating in this process, we can ensure that the Local Area Plan (LAP) reflects the needs and priorities of our community.

Needs and Priorities

In the context of plans to bring the town’s population to 30,000 by 2035, a number of key infrastructural deficits must be urgently addressed:

The Maynooth Outer Orbital Route (MOOR) must be advanced by speedy completion of the Eastern Ring Road (MERR) and ringfencing funds for the development of the other sections of the MOOR.

Provision must be made for the health care needs of a town of 30,000.  A Primary Healthcare Centre must be built as a matter of urgency.

The DART+ West project must be completed.

The acute shortage of sporting, recreation and leisure facilities must be addressed.  The need for a Community Centre has long been agreed.  MCC believes that the need goes far beyond a single space for meetings.  A substantial amount of land in and near the town centre is already in public ownership.  The LAP must set aside land in a central location in the town for leisure and recreational use, with a purpose-built Amenities Centre at it’s heart.

The LAP must also make provision for a central location for artistic, cultural and civic activities.

Engagement with the Planners

The planning team from Kildare County Council will soon publish the first draft of the 2024-2030 Local Area Plan. In advance, they will hold a Drop-in event in the Glenroyal Hotel where all interested parties and members of the public will have an opportunity to meet with them to discuss the proposals.  This represents a wonderful opportunity for residents, businesses and community groups in Maynooth to have input into how the town will develop.
